Dr. Homiwell Library at Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) recently hosted a two-day national workshop titled ‘Exploring Open-Source Software for Library Automation: KOHA and DSpace 7.’ The workshop’s conclusion marked an enriching event that took place in the scenic city of Shillong.

In close collaboration with the College Internal Quality Assessment Cell (IQAC) of Sankardev and MLCU’s own IQAC, this knowledge-sharing initiative unfolded at the MLCU Hall in Nongrah, Shillong. A noteworthy highlight of the workshop was the presence of Dr. FR Sumer, the Librarian of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), who played a pivotal role as the main resource person.

Distinguished guest speakers included Prof. Sanjay K Singh, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science at Guwahati University, Kausik Singha, Project Manager for Library Automation (East & North East India Region) at Rapid Radio Solutions Pvt. Ltd., and Alovi Zhimomi, a visiting faculty member from the School of Agriculture Science at Nagaland University.

The resource persons shed light on the significance of DSpace 7 and KOHA as open-source software in the context of library automation. A key component of the workshop was the hands-on session, enabling participants to actively engage with KOHA and DSpace, gaining practical insights into library automation and digital asset management. This interactive workshop contributed to a more profound understanding of how these tools can be effectively utilized.

During their sessions, the guest speakers addressed topics such as the role of libraries in the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the implementation of RFID Automation in Libraries, selecting the right technology, and dispelling myths surrounding technology usage. The utilization of open-source software KOHA in library automation was also explored in-depth.

The workshop was graced by the presence of Prof. TK Kharbamon, the Vice Chancellor of MLCU, alongside Manbor Singh Warjri, representing the IQAC at Sankardev College.

This collaborative effort brought together approximately 30 participants, consisting of library professionals from both within and beyond the state, as well as faculty and IT students from MLCU. Their collective benefit from this workshop underscores the significance of such knowledge-sharing endeavors in the realm of library science and technology.
